Why Hypnosis Works

One of the main concepts in Ericksonian hypnosis is that we all have something that knows. Erickson believed that everyone has a powerful core that is healthy. Hypnosis is the tool we can use to establish or reconnect with that robust basis. The question then becomes, “What is the best way to achieve the connection for this client since it is not a one-size-fits-all approach”? To see it from another perspective, look at hypnosis as dealing directly with the subconscious mind and letting the conscious mind take a mini-vacation.

People have said that we only use a small portion of our mind and be careful of what we say around children; they are like sponges and soak up everything. Perhaps you have said something along these lines. Thus, we describe the conscious mind (the small part of the mind’s power) and the subconscious mind (the powerful sponge that soaks up everything).

Erickson understood another part: the higher mind or higher self. This higher mind is the powerful health core that Erickson alluded to and what makes personal changes at such a profound level. And again, hypnosis is the tool that connects the subconscious mind and the higher self or powerful core at a conscious level.
